Swami Ram Teerth narrates an incident about a man:

A man was going to visit his in-laws for the first time therefore he was carrying sweets, fruits etc. with him. He was riding on a horse along with bag full of various things.

He had completed just a small portion of his journey when he thought: 'The poor horse is so much in trouble! As it is the day is so hot, and on top of it I'm sitting and then there is the weight of all these bags.'

That stupid man came down the horse and thought of carrying all the luggage by himself. He carried his bedding & sweets on his back, some of the things in his hands and put other things on his head. Thus that man tied up all the luggage on his body as if he was putting everything on a donkey and then he sat on the horse and thought: 'So what if I'm suffering at least this horse is comfortable!'

By the time that man reached the house of his in-laws, he was tired like anything. It was evening and the father-in-law was standing in front of the house waiting for the son-in-law. Then he saw his son-in-law and said:

'Welcome! Why are you looking so tired?'

Son-in-law: 'I'll tell that later. Please set up a bed for me immediately.'

The father-in-law set the bed worriedly. The son-in-law came down the horse, dumped all the luggage in a corner and then threw himself on the bed like a dead body.

Everybody was very worried to see the son-in-law in such a state.

Father-in-law: 'How did you become so desperately tired?'

Son-in-law: 'How could this horse carry my weight along with the weight of all the luggage? I felt pity for the horse and therefore I piled everything on myself.'

Father-in-law: "Oh foolish son-in-law! Even after putting everything on yourself didn't you sit on the horse afterall? So the complete weight was obviously on the horse. Unncessarily you carried all the luggage and became tired.'

The man had the illusion that all the weight is on him and not the horse and therefore made his state so miserable. In the same way, in reality when God is carrying the weight of the whole world, man beleives that, "I've done." Doctors believe that they have cured the patients... The innocent doctor does not know that he just cleaned and put medicine on the wound but it was God who healed the wound and gave a new skin to the patient.

Similarly, you think that you are running the house. If you were not earning, then everybody would have died of hunger. God makes arrangement to feed the birds & animals, so will he not take care of members of your family? Why do you consider yourself to be care-taker and then worry for your son & daughter, worry for money?

'Oh Man! why are you lean and weak?'

'I'm worried for the whole town.'

Will the whole town be benefitted by your worry? Throw away the worry in the well.
God gives cloth, wood and fire even to a dead man,
It is so sad that the living man keeps worrying...

Do not worry but contemplate on the fact that: 'When will I know Thee... the dear-one Who is in our heart, Who is all-knowing & inspiration for all, Who is the care-taker of all, Whose strength makes this body function, when will I know You..." Never consider yourself as the do-er of actions. God himself is the do-er & the one undergoing action. You have not made this world and the weight of this world is not over you. If you surrender to the God who has made this world and who is taking care of this world, then whatever you do will be noble and good for everybody.

Shri Krishna said to Arjuna in the Bhagvad Geeta: 'Give up your pride, beliefs & attachment to body and then come in my shelter. I am all-knowing and the supreme soul. By doing so you will experience divine peace and reach the supreme blissful state.'

By believing God to be the do-er (Karta & the one undergoing action (Bharta), one surrenders to God completely. If you feed a begger and then think that you were the one who fed the poor beggar, then this reflects petty behaviour (Tamas). A believer in action (Rajas) will think that he was fortunate to feed the beggar and thanks God for giving him this oppurtinty to offer his service. While a believer of Truth (Satva) will think that he was just a media, it was God who gave strength to his hands to feed the God who is in the beggar.

Your heart will become pure if you believe that by serving your mother or a guest or anybody else you are actually serving the God in their form. Don't think that you served the helpless mother or guest. Those people appear to be helpless in their physical form but in reality the all-knowing God is sitting in them. That very God is the doer & the one undergoing action.

You will be successful every time you believe in the presence of God behind every action. You will not be able to worship properly the day you think that you do worship and that you will worship nicely. Something will go wrong that day. While worshipping if you worship by loving and remembering God & by becoming His, then you do not feel that you are the do-er. One enjoys meditation, Japa, worship or service when there is the belief that, "My dear Lord is doing and He only is getting that done!"

Whenever you come in care of God knowingly or unknowingly, your work becomes divine, you are able to complete work without being worried and after completion also you feel the sweetness of that work. Whenever you work with worries, pride & jealousy on your head then your work also becomes difficult, sad & complex and also the result...

Thre is enthuziasm before initiating the work, there is hard work while working and after completion there is the fruit of the work in heart. Acquiring power or richness is not the fruit, but the fruit of noble work is feeling peace, simplicity, happiness and the grace of God in ones heart. The result of selfish & evil work is unhappiness, depression & loss of peace of mind. The internal happiness appears & grows in the heart if one works with the attitude that God Himself is the do-er & the one undergoing action.

People may praise an officer using attractive words even if he/she is not praiseworthy in order to get their work done. The officer then starts thinking that he/she is the basis of all the work which is being done. But when that officer retires nobody recognizes him/her. God is the only true officer of all. If somebody praises you that you are a big person, then you should understand that you are not big, He is big who is making your heart beat & brain work.

If you sit down for meditation for 2 hours and spend rest of 22 hours in inflating your pride, then there will be no spiritual growth. It is good to devote time in prayers & meditation, but in the rest of the time one should think that, 'There is the hand of God in whatever work is being done, that very God is the do-er & the one undergoing action.'If you start contemplating on this thought, then you will soon realize the true self of God.
There is nothing mine in me, whatever is there is yours.
Giving your things to you, what is mine!
